Been looking at reasons for choosing obesity as our focus area. I have uploaded 2 documents regarding childhood obesity in general. I found the 2 articles to be very interesting. Basically a 1 in 4 children are overweight or obese in Australia. Quite alarming stats. The article from the childhood obesity summit also talks about the impact childhood obesity has on the Australian society which is reason for dealing with this issue. I have also found this snippet of info from the Penrith City council website which i think has some bearing on our decision to focus on childhood obesity.

Preliminary figures for the population of Penrith City at the last Census in 2001 was 172,397. From 1996 to 2001 there has been a 5.7% increase (9275 people) in the Penrith LGA population. Furthermore, from 1991 to 2001 there has been a 15% growth rate. This makes Penrith one of the three largest local government areas in Western Sydney and the sixth largest population of any local government area in New South Wales. The City of Penrith has a young population. At the last census in 1996, the 0-4 year old age group was the largest within the population. The next largest age group was the 5-9 year olds and the 25-29 year olds. The population of Penrith is primarily in residential estates spreading north and south from the Great Western Highway, the M4 Freeway and the railway. In fact, 90% of Penrith residents reside in urban areas of the LGA.

I think with the stats of 1 in 4 children being obese and the majority of Penrith's population being young people this says that this issue is really a big thing for Penrith as a region. Great point Melina, Penrith is populated with many young people and a really great reason to justify our health focus area of obesity and nutrition.
Anyways, having a break for a bit. Will check out some more sites in a little while. Hope this helps with starting us off on our next presentation page.
Cheers, Melina

Hi Again,
Have uploaded another 3 docs. 2 are information on childhood obesity and its health effects. 1 doc is from an American website but I figured the impacts of obesity are the same regardless of the country. I have also uploaded a doc on the economic impacts of childhood obesity in Australia. I haven't read through it yet but will do this over the next few days and post my summary for you (it is pretty lengthy and will take us all a fair while to get through it). Anyways this is what i have come up with today. I'll read through that economic paper and get back to you all after that. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I can't wait to hear everyone else's input.
Cheers, Melina
P.s page 12 of the economic perspective has key point summary which might be worth everyone taking a quick look at.

Hi Guys,
Sorry I have been a bit out of the loop, will read through the documents and add to it today.
Jess

Hey Guys
Jess and I are currently reading the documents and going through priority health area information. Will post shortly. We have been talking about the powerpoint presentation and thinking that we need to work out how we are going to do the audio section (who does what, and what will be included).
Jess and I are going to see Annette tomorrow after our lecture at uni and ask her about the audio and visual components of the powerpoint, just so we are fully comfortable with what we are doing. We will let you know how it goes and what she says!
Jess and I are happy to work together this week to complete the priority health area slide as Malina and Tammy have contributed largely by doing background research and finding statistic. We think it might be easier then everyone trying to put it together. As Jess and I live together we are very happy to work together. Please let us know how you feel about this idea, we are keen to get it done by the end of the week. If your not happy with this idea just let us know :)

9/7/12
Hi Again,
Been thinking of some questions to ask Anette tomorrow, this is a general idea of what we are going to find out:
-How are we being marked on it?
-How do we select what information we put onto the slides as we have done a lot of research and it is rather difficult to cut it down. It seems as though we have so much information but one slide for each section is very limited?
-What exactly is included in the audio? Is it just reading out the slide?
-Would it matter if a different person did the audio each week? Or does it have to be one person doing it?
Does anyone have anything they want to add? Sorry its such late notice.
Will post the answers tomorrow after lecture.
Jess and Georgie

Hey girls,
Sound like a good lot of questions. I personally don't have any more I would like to add. It is so helpful having on campus students in our group :). I have just posted up my summary of the economic perspective on childhood obesity. At the end of the paper there is a really large appendix which briefly summarises a number of strategies that have been implemented right across Australia. I have had a look through these as well and have jotted down the page numbers for easy reference if everyone wants to have a quick squiz.
Pgs 134, 161, 163, 164, 170, 174 & 182 all have strategies relevant to NSW public schools. ( I haven't included the early childhood ones for 4yrs and under).
With the couple of papers I have posted already there is a whole tun of information to work with which should hopefully suffice for our slide. After your chat with Annette tomorrow girls hopefully it will give us a better direction with how to deal with all this info.
Just wanted to confirm that everyone knows we are now a group of 5 which means we only have to critique 2 other group presentations instead of 3.
Anyways signing off for the night. Will have to devote the next 2 days to my other unit cos it is feeling a little unloved right now but will be checking in on the wiki to see how tomorrows meeting goes.
Cheerios and goodnight
Melina

Hi girls,
Have you all had a chance to look at our powerpoint presentation in the files and folder section. I have completed the mindmap for the context page and have the transcript ready to record. I remember reading somewhere that the transcript for the slides dont have to be the same as the information on the slide. There was too much to write on the slide for context which is why I chose the option of a mindmap. I'm sure we can do more than one slide for each area if necessary. I cant imagine only having a 8 page powerpoint for a 12 minute presentation. Jess and Georgie, your questions would help us with some direction. I'm happy to add info about our health priority area but if Jess and Georgie would like to collate and add to the powerpoint then that would be fantastic. Maybe the next part Tanya could collate and add into powerpoint. I've spent alot of time on this unit and like Melina, my other units are being slightly neglected, I have already added a slide for the definition of 'childhood obesity'. I'm thinking this is important so it is explicit on what our health area is. Check it out, see what you think and please let me know if you want anything changed. Cheers, Tammy

Some quotes that may come in handy....'
http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/publichealth/healthpromotion/obesity/ 'Overweight and obesity is a serious, chronic medical condition, which is associated with a wide range of debilitating and life threatening conditions. Large increases in obesity rates among Australians have the potential to erode many recent health gains. In 2009, the NSW Population Health Survey showed that 52.5% of the population was classified as overweight or obese. A significantly higher proportion of males (59.5%) than females (45.4%) were overweight or obese. Rates of childhood overweight and obesity have also been increasing in recent years. NSW Schools Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey (SPANS) data from 2004 show that 25% of boys and 23.3% of girls in NSW were either overweight or obese. This represents a significant increase over the last decade. 2010 SPANS data will be released shortly. Childhood obesity is a serious concern because obese children have a greatly increased likelihood of becoming obese adults. Obese adults who were overweight as children also have higher levels of weight-related morbidity, and a higher risk of preventable mortality, than those obese adults who only became obese in adulthood.'

Quote from Penrith City Council website (which Penrith South falls under)....'Physical activity levels and obesity remain a challenge within the Penrith region. Based on information from the NSW Health Population Health Survey (2009) approximately 52% of persons in the Sydney West Area undertake adequate physical activity, whilst 58% of the population is classified as overweight or obese (higher than the NSW average of 50%)'. http://www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/sustainability/Indicator-PC16-2011.asp

Thanks for the extra contributions! Georgie and I are going to work on it tomorrow night at seven and then finish it all off on Wednesday. So hopefully after tomorrows lecture we will be completely clear about any of our queries. It also means that we will (hopefully) complete it by Wednesday which will then give everyone a chance to look at it on Thursday and Friday to see if we want any changes made.
In the meantime it sounds like your units need a bit of loving, so Georgie and I will take over for a little bit and give you a break. We will sort out the next bit later.
So glad that we are getting compensated! Anette seems pretty fair in how she did it.
Tammy, sorry i didn't mention it before, but I did check out the powerpoint. Looks great! Is the transcript that you will be reading just the document?
Goodnight ladies, Jess

Hi girls, these are some notes that i took down from the lecture. There was a bunch of useful websites, but the slide was too quick. I will either wait for it to be posted on moodle or email Judy for the lecture.

National Health Priorities

  • Australia’s Response to WHO Global strategy “Health for All by the Year 200”
  • 1996 CVD etc.
  • 1997

National Health Priorities

  • Strengths-based approach to the Health and Physical Education curriculum will acknowledge that most students came to the learning area feeling positive about their health (ACARA HPE Shape Paper 2012).
  • Most kids present at school as healthy people > building on those strengths > rather than seeing it as a deficient
  • However, some groups of young people who are a disadvantage > we are not ignoring it. See risk factors:
  • Risk factors – physical activity, indigenous, low birth weight and disease of the respiratory system (19%)
  • Australia the Healthiest Country by 2020 (Good document) > provides a snapshot of what we need to do to.

  • Children should not spend more than two hours a day using electronic media for entertainment, particularly during daylight hours.

Summary of the Process/ Procedures

  • Know the health priorities
  • Contextualise the priority areas in terms of children (need to be specific to children)
  • What’s modifiable? What effect might it have on the individuals?
  • Look at the community and school context
  • Be informed by reliable data eg.
  • Evidence based approach – could include: hospital admissions, research based data/ local data.. then choose your health area and provide justification.

What to Do

  • Describe what your group aims to achieve when targeting this priority area

10/07/12 11:50am
Hi again,
I had a meeting with Anette this morning and it was really useful. I got a good grasp of the assignment overall and the priority area. She's had a look at what we have done so far and has said it's really good.
The main things I got out of it was that we need to do research but not go over the top.. because at the end of the day it's only going to be used in only one or two lectures plus audio. We will be given more details on the other areas as we go along, so we need to just focus on it one by one (which is working well). The other really important thing is Anette suggested that we narrow down obesity as it is such a broad topic, into physical activity or nutrition. I completely agree and it would be easier if we decided, she suggested nutrition. WHAT ARE YOUR SUGGESTIONS ON THIS?? Georgie and I are meeting tonight so would you be able to let me know if you want to narrow it down.
Here's the answers to some of the questions, instead of writing comments separately, maybe if you have something to say you can just write it under that question in your colour:
How are we being marked on it? Part A UNE grade system. Part B example of type of rubric, it’s in progress. What we are looking for in the rubric is in the shell. Deliberately left it open so that they could be generous to the groups.

Do we need to put up work in progress? It’s completely up to us Annette was only doing it to save us loosing the lot of it.

In-text reference? Definitely need to be doing! Need a reference list at the end. You can decrease the font size so it is really small. Don’t mix up the reference list with resources.

Limit on the number of slides? Your audience is your peers; remember the attention span of them! Minimum is what is on the shell (one slide for each area). Can have a couple of slides per area. Communicate message in most powerful and concise. Have less on your slides and more on your audio.

Integration of other KLA’s? It would be wonderful to see integration, but because of volume of work don’t have time to do it.

How do we select what information we put onto the slides as we have done a lot of research and it is rather difficult to cut it down. It seems as though we have so much information but one slide for each section is very limited? Just the key points on the slides, add powerful commentary. Keep it simple!

What exactly is included in the audio? Is it just reading out the slide? Literally speak to it. Allowing them to get message through the oral. Get a feel for it.
Would it matter if a different person did the audio each week? Or does it have to be one person doing it? Can do whatever we want. It is easier to listen to one voice. Suggested that for some slides to break it up and keep people interested one slide we could have a conversation between two people. We will need to make a transcript for each section.. suggested that we write it in the powerpoint in the notes section. What are your thoughts? Should we put in the transcript for the first slide soon? The idea of two people having a conversation is a great idea. I like the idea of the two person conversation my thought is to have the transcript ready but to add the transcript at the end and have it flow straight all the slides instead of stopping and starting. (Tanya)16/07 5.13pm
Select a focus area?
- Contributors to obesity > nutrition or inactivity. Eg. Hands on Food (a nutrition education resource). What are your ideas??? I concentrated on the nutrition side in the outcomes and you will see how they fit into the syllabus, I haven't gone any further in it just in case I was on the wrong track didn't want to waste time heading in the wrong direction I thought we had decided to concentrate on the nutrition side and there are certainly areas in the syllabus in every stage to fit it in. Tanya16/075.13pm
- Reason we chose this focus area> national, state, local (three or four dot points)!!!! Push these points. This is what should be included in our powerpoint slide.
- Commentary > doing it for this reason!
- Our priority area > Add quotes, WHO, govt, council

10/7/12 1:30pmThis is an email from Anette (ideas for resources)
Start by going to the website:
http://www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au/campaigns-programs/live-life-well-@-school.aspx
Live Life Well @ School is evidenced-based as you will clearly read. Look
also at nutrition teaching resources on that site
Hope this helps,
Annette

Hya Jess,
Great work with all your info. I'm really happy with nutrition as our focus area. I have put a definition of 'obesity' on the powerpoint slide.Should I also add a definition of nutrition. This will guide our focus health area. I will add the audio for the first slide tonight. Our transcript is the info on the context analysis page. Annette emailed me and said that we are on track for a HD after she saw our powerpoint presentation. We must be on the right track. Do you guys want more info for the health focus area or are you okay with what we have supplied to date? Penrith City Council is a great website. We could even check out Nepean Hospital which may give us statistics or info about obesity and the effects, hence why nutritional education is important..Will touch base a bit later. Chat soon, Tammy

11/07/12 8:00am
Hi Again,
Happy that you are okay with the narrowing down of the priority area. I think we will focus on that as myself, Tammy and Georgie agree. We will be working on it today. Feel free to add a definition, but only if you already have found one.
Anette suggested writing the transcript (which she described as talking about what was on the powerpoint slide for people who are too lazy to read it) in the notes section of the powerpoint. It made sense as towards the end of the unit one or two people could read out the notes and record the audio section. This is just a suggestion, let me know what you think. Anette suggested Georgie doing it as she had a bit of a late start. Maybe Tammy you could just write the transcript for the first one instead of recording it.
Tammy and Melina, you have provided us with a great base! We should be fine to pump out the priority area and write the transcript. Have noted those sites and will have a little look today.
Thanks for the feedback! Jess :)

Hi Girls,
Just on my lunch break so just a quick hello. I think nutrition is a great idea particularly with the mandatory fresh tastes @ school strategy and it links in with the location of PSPS as well being close to all those fast food outlets. Had a look at the powerpoint and it looks fabulous. well done Tammy! Also just thought that if we wanted to include links to other KLAs i know having done a science unit last trimester that there are strong links between nutrition and the content strand living things if we wanted to add that in. IT basically looks at how to sustain life in animals, plants and people.
Anyways the presentation is pulling together really well and it's fantastic to have some direction and know we are on the right path. I'm going to start having a think about the outcomes and maybe check out the NSW PDHPE syllabus when I'm done making a start on my other unit.
Cheers all,
Melina

11/07/12
Thanks Melina for getting back to me. We are just going to take it as a yes from Tanya for the nutrition as the priority area. Georgie and I are working on it now. Will post once finished.
Jess and Georgie

11/7/12 6pm
Hi ladies, we have added to the powerpoint slide. Please take a look at it and let us know what you think. Georgie has added a few documents which we will be using for the transcript. We will finish writing the transcript tomorrow after we hear back from you.
Tammy or Melina, you will need to do in text referencing for the first slide. :)
We will wait to hear from you.
Jess and Georgie.

11/07/12 7.30pm
My internet is back up to speed, I can finally watch the lectures and hopefully get a better grasp on what we are doing because at the moment it is as clear as mud. I have no children tomorrow ( which is the first 24 hour period I have been childless for about 7 months) So I am hoping to get into this tomorrow, so if you have anything in particular you would like me to do, research, or what ever let me know, I have not plans on wasting my day resting have 24 hours to catch up and get ahead with Uni.

Tanya : )

Hi Ladies, love the added slides to the powerpoint, well done Jess & Georgie... I just updated the presentation by adding transitions and animation to the context analysis part. I added in the transcript to the section you wanted it in. I have recorded the transcript for the context analysis and will add tonight. Meant to add last night but had the baby coughing in the background - ooops! Our presentation is impressive so far! Tammy

11/7/12 8:30pm
Glad you are happy with it. Thanks for your input! How do you edit the powerpoint without having to save a new one? We didn't know how too.
Georgie and I are planning on finishing off the transcript section tomorrow morning (before 11am) and then we will post it for your ideas.
I was thinking of easier ways of organising our documents... One idea was if we could label everything from the context analysis with an A at the start of it.. then priority area related things with a B. Eg... B Context Analysis document. It just gets very confusing with so many of them. Let me know.
Whilst we have a bit of time up our sleeves, Tanya it may be worthwhile to make a start on the next section tomorrow. However, we haven't had a lecture on it yet so that may be a little difficult. There is a few documents that were posted today about nutrition (by Georgie and myself), maybe these would be helpful. Just have to link it to the syllabus. You could also begin researching some ideas for it eg. crunch and sip. Feel free to add a new page for this section. I'm pretty sure the next section is self explanatory, but if we head off in the wrong direction we can change it after Tuesday's lecture.
I think the most important thing is to stay on top of each section and make sure that we do the proper research, a good slide, include the transcript and complete the referencing. That way we won't have a pile up!
Jess

11/7/12 9.53pm
The only way I know to edit the powerpoint slide is to open the latest one then once all changes are made, save it onto my desktop as the current name of the file and that way when I load into the files and folders section, it will overwrite the old one. I will delete my first powerpoint presentation as this is no longer needed. Free up the files and folder section a bit. We could name each file starting with the section it belongs too - then the actual file name... ie... content analysis - blah blah blah. That way it'll be easy to distinguish which section it belongs too.

I agree with Jess that it would be great if Tanya could make a start to the next section. We should try and start this asap so it gives adequate time for everyone to comment, change and then record in our powerpoint presentation. I will make the new page up in the right hand side for you Tanya so you can add what you need. When we all find anything that is handy we will paste into the page for you.

After recording the context, having a long winded transcript for one page only is a little boring. We may need to have more than one page on some sections to keep the reader entertained and interested. I added animation to context analysis for this reason, as it was fairly boring just sitting there for one minute looking at the same screen. At least the reader/audience can keep up with where the narrator is up too. Please check out the presentation tomorrow (12/7/12) as the context analysis will be completed (including narrating).

P.S. Narrating was so easy to record. In powerpoint, press into 'slideshow' then press onto 'record narration'. So user friendly.

Goodnight all - impressed with what we have to date!
Cheers,Tammy

11/7/12 11.13pm
I have tried all ways to attach the updated powerpoint presentation with the audio for context analysis but the file is 26MB which is 6MB over our limit to attach files onto this wikispace. What to do??? Should we worry about compiling the presentation and at the end we can worry about the narration? I've tried to save as a lower quality but I just cant seem to get it down to 20MB. I will call help desk tomorrow and see what they say. May be an easy way around it. Chat soon, Tammy

Tammy I don't know if you have tried but you can reduce the quality of the photos and thereby reducing the size of the file considerably, I had to for another subject, and felt that the quality hadn't changed much. Tanya

12/7/12 9am
Hi Tammy,
As long as we have the transcript in the powerpoint (in the notes section i mean) I think that will be fine. We can record it at the end.. i definitely think that would be the easier part of the assignment. Having heaps of different powerpoint slides scattered and then having to compile them is a good way of getting confused and loosing things. The important part is completing each slide, including referencing and writing the transcript.
As far as the organising goes, I think it would be really helpful Tammy if you could edit the titles into the different categories (I would but I am not the organiser so it won't let me). At least then we will have a better idea of what everything is.
Tanya, are you happy to make a dint in the next section?

12/7/09 11am
Hi girls, will fix up my section of the powerpoint today and post for you to look at.
Jess

Hi all where and how can I access what has been done of the powerpoint. Thanks

Hi All,

Really quick hello cos i got a half lunch cos work is CRAZY!!!!!!! powerpoint is looking superb. I have tomorrow off and unlike previous weeks I've promised myself I will be diligent and get some uni work done. Any requests on imput i can make just let me know.
Tanya you can access the powerpoint when you go to the right hand side and click on "pages and files' and scroll down adn you will see the powerpoint listed.
I agree about the naming convention because our files are getting pretty crazy.
Anyways times up for me but I'll try check in again tonight.
cyaz all,
Melina

Hi again happy to make a start in the next section. Thank you Melina found the powerpoint.

Just a thought and I know that it is cosmetic - I was thinking maybe a slide near the context analysis of a picture of the front of the school or an aerial view from google earth or something I did in ICT was a google fly in to show where the school is, the demographics of the housing and where it is situated amongst them and show that the school does have playing fields and grass areas. Not sure if the last one is possible on the powerpoint as it needs to be included as a video, and may need to be manual pressed to play??? Just a thought. I feel that it helps give a feel of the school, though I know that we need to keep the visual to a minimum.

Tanya 1.30pm.12/7/12

Just to let the internal students know I live in Armidale and can catch up with you if that is beneficial and helpful for the assignment though Monday mornings are the only time I don't have children. But can work in with you if needed.

Tanya

Hi Everyone,

You should all be very happy with the progress we have made as I know we are a lot further ahead compared to a lot of other groups! Go us! One very important thing that we all need to remember is to record any source we use so that it can be referenced. I find it easier to reference all at the same time so it's done and you don't have to worry about it later. I have reference the health priority slide and am happy to do the referencing for other slides, just send me the link and I can do it if referencing isn't your strong point. Tanya I think that is defiantly an idea to look into about having an aerial view of the school (if we can fit it in the slide). Having a video could get a bit complex but a picture could be good, to get an idea of the setting of the school.
Tanya that's a great idea, we could defiantly meet up, we have lectures 10-11 and 1-4. If any of those times suit you let us know otherwise I'm sure we will find time somewhere else in the week!

Georgie

Hi everyone I made a start yesterday on outcomes which is in the file titled outcomes, would love some input before I go any further to make sure I am on the right track with everyones thoughts.
Thanks Tanya

13/07/2012
Hey ladies,
We've done so well. An aerial shot of the school is a great idea, maybe this could be placed on the front page. Will reference the first slide - context analysis page. When I finished recording and added to the slide to save - I did try to reduce the quality but it didn't bring it down enough. I'm sure there is a way around it. Tanya, will look at the outcome page and try to add what I can to help. I've sorted through our files page and renamed all the files under what slide they are for. Hope I haven't gotten any mixed up or named under the incorrect slide. If so, let me know. Cheers, Tammy
